 BONOBO (live)

Brighton-born Simon Green, best known as Bonobo, is one of the premier electronic artists working today, headlining events and festivals the world over. With well over a decade of experience under his belt, he rose swiftly through the ranks of the early 00s electronica scene fronting an enticing brand of downtempo, dub-heavy and blissed-out songs, especially on early releases 'Animal Magic' and 'Dial 'M' For Monkey', as well as an impressive collection of EPs and commissioned mixes. His 2006 breakthrough album 'Days To Come', ushering in a more lush and organic sound, vaulted him to a wider audience, scooping the renowned Gilles Peterson listener’s poll for Album of The Year as well as winning plaudits from across the critical spectrum. To tie in with this musical development, he put together and rehearsed a full band (string section included!) that could properly do justice to the detailed instrumentation found on 'Days To Come'.

His fourth album 'Black Sands' came out in 2010 to even greater fanfare than the last, cementing Bonobo as a true force to be reckoned with, amalgamting influences cherrypicked from across the globe. As his music had begun to reach a considerably wider audience, being embraced especially by the dance community, 'Black Sands Remixed' naturally followed, featuring reworks from a diverse cast of electronic producers such as Four Tet, Floating Points, Machinedrum & Duke Dumont. In addition to Green's own edits of artists including Amon Tobin, Mark Ronson, Erykah Badu, Coldcut and Mos Def, it further elevated his status and worked as a fine stopgap as he continued to tour extensively thoughout last year.

After much feverish anticipation, April 1st will see the return of Bonobo with his fifth studio LP on longstanding label Ninja Tune, entitled 'The North Borders', a cohesive record which both carries on the inimitable style Green has crafted in the past 13 years and marks natural evolution for the broad palette he drew from on 'Black Sands'. The first track from 'The North Borders' was unveiled on Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 6 program in late January, which you would be wise to check out below.

Easily recognisable but difficult to pin down, Bonobo has proven himself a master of progression, constantly exploring beyond parameters he sets himself with each step forward, without ever losing sight of the mischief and the mystery that make his music so captivating and endlessly replayable. We are very pleased to have him play for us in Nottingham, bringing his well-travelled and utterly hypnotic live show to Rock City. Expect a slew of new material as well as the old classics. Don't sleep on this one.
