Darq E Freaker may not be a household name, but if you've been out to a club in the past few years you are bound to have heard some of his work. Despite having few releases to his name to date, he truly makes them count; as such, this young Londoner has garnered a reputation as one of the foremost producers working within Grime's colourful, dancefloor-ready second wave. As well as landing credits on Wiley's recent "It's All Fun & Games Til Vol.1" mixtape, he was on the buttons for Tempa T's 2009 monumental "Next Hype", a track which reinvigorated the scene and remains to this day one of the biggest ever Grime anthems, launching Tempz into superstardom and pushing Darq E Freaker right to the front of the pack.
2011's "Cherryade" riddim, boasting a melody as powerful as the bass underpinning it, picked up a hefty amount of support from DJs both within and outside the grime community, catching the ear of charismatic rap-maverick Danny Brown, who sought out a collaboration. The resulting tune, entitled "Blueberry (Pills + Cocaine)", is of the most exciting records of recent years, a Transatlantic marriage of Detroit's raw swagger and London's cheeky exuberance. The track has proven extremely popular in both clubs and beyond, having been playlisted by Radio 1 and 1Xtra, bringing increased exposure to both Danny and the more modest and grounded Darq E Freaker.
His DJ sets pack the same joyful energy as his studio output, weaving a path through grime anthems old and new, plus a smattering of US hip-hop and other high-octane club fare. Expect a lot of classics, a lot of rewinds and a lot of fun.
